Svensk Hyllningsfest translates loosely to "Swedish Honoring Festival." The first Svensk Hyllningsfest was held in 1941 with authentic Swedish costumes displayed in store windows and the "Folkdanslag" (folk dance troup) group forming. Today's Svensk Hyllningsfest is a two-day free festival held every odd-numbered year in October and features Swedish dancing, traditional music, a parade on Saturday, art vendors, food vendors, entertainment, and a farmer's market.
The Swedish smörgåsbord is legendary. Tickets sell out well in advance of Svensk Hyllningsfest. There are four opportunities to participate in the smörgåsbord with a 5:00pm and a 7:00pm serving on both Friday and Saturday, with seating for 200 at each serving. The tickets can be purchased from the Svensk Hyllningsfest website. The menu consists over 35 different dishes, some items are: Swedish meatballs, potato sausage, parsley potatoes, cucumbers and onions, potato salad, smoked salmon, Swedish rye bread, Swedish tea rings, and ostkaka with lingonberries. For an idea of what kind of effort this takes, the 2025 Svensk Hyllningsfest committee rolled 7,000 meatballs!
Våffeldagen is International Waffle Day! A whimsical, fun-loving, party extolling the humble waffle--and everyone knows the waffle is superior to the pancake due to its built-in syrup swimming pools and crispier attitude.
And just how does one celebrate Våffeldagen? In Lindsborg, you will find waffles everywhere: waffle costumes, waffle activities, special waffle menu items, and walking waffle people. Yes, this is a real Swedish celebration too. Lindsborg celebrates Våffeldagen on the Saturday closest to the Swedish day of celebration (March 25).
