A Swedish Settlement in the Finger of the Flint Hills
Lindsborg was founded in 1869 when Swedish immigrants, led by Pastor Olof Olsson, settled land purchased by the First Swedish Agricultural Company. Seeking farmland and opportunity, they build homes, farms, churches, and schools despite the hardships of prairie life.
Pastor Olsson established Bethany Lutheran Church, which became a cornerstone of the community. As more immigrants arrived, they brought traditions, creaftsmanship, music, and customs that continue to shape Lindsborg today.
Unlike many immigrant communities, Lindsborg intentionally preserved its Swedish identity while embracing life in America, earning its reputation as one of the nation's best-preserved Swedish American communities.
