Catherine Coughlin, Artist-in-Residence

The Red Barn Studio Museum is pleased to welcome Catherine Coughlin, an artist from Saint George, Kansas, as Artist-in-Residence from June 22 - July 1.

Catherine is a native New Englander; her childhood home a stone’s throw away from Robert Frost’s farm. She grew up skiing in the White Mountains during the winter and spent her summers living off the coast of Massachusetts. Catherine exhibited her artistic talents from a young age and sought art education throughout her childhood and college years. She also grew up with a strong desire to travel, and through her husband’s military career, she has lived in multiple states and overseas. After her husband’s retirement from the military and relocation to Kansas for work, Catherine reluctantly became a permanent resident of the Midwest. This relocation has deeply impacted her artwork, as Catherine reflects on her own experience of moving and that of the early Kansas settlers’ and Native Americans’ relocations. Of her artwork, Catherine writes

How do my own physical, emotional and spiritual battles of growing roots from rootlessness– resemble and contrast those who journeyed here before? How does the local beauty heal those wounds of separation? My current work attempts visual interpretations of these questions.

Catherine works in a range of media including pastel, watercolor, and mixed media. She also has experience with painting several residential murals in New Hampshire, Maryland, and Georgia, and her smaller artworks are held in private collections. In addition to studio work, Catherine worked at the Currier Museum of Art, managed John Tucker Fine Arts in Savannah Georgia, and has taught art for the past 11 years in Kansas schools. She is a member of the Catholic Artists Society, Newport Art Association, and operates Stone Cottage Arts.

While at the Red Barn, Catherine hopes to work further in a variety of media, including plein air painting. She plans to appreciate the peace and beauty of the studio space and seek inspiration from her surroundings.

The Red Barn Studio Museum, located at 212 S. Main Street, is open Tuesday-Friday 10:00am-5:00pm and 1:00-5:00pm on Saturday and Sunday. For more information, visit redbarnstudio.org.
